A Study On The Drawings And Documents For Master Carpenter Wang Shi-meng In The Group Xi-di Of Quanzhou

Xi-di sect is a group of carpenters from Xidi Village,Chongwu Town,Hui’an County,Quanzhou City,Fujian Province.As the representative of master carpenter in the south of Fujian,Xi-di sect has an important impact on south of Fujian,Taiwan and Southeastern Asia.Shimeng Wang is now the representative of Xi-di sect.In this essay,we continued the research of “A Study on the Gao-chi Arts for Master Carpenter Wang Shi-meng in the Group Xi-di of Quanzhou”.The paper analyzes the expression and drawing characteristics of Shimeng Wang’s large-scale wooden structures.His select works will be provided as case study and the design method of his will also be discussed.This paper is structured as follows:First,the paper will analyze drawing characteristics of the Xi-di sect which Shimeng Wang represents.This paper will compare four master carpenter including Yishun Wang,Zhaocai Liu,Shengfa Liu and Shimeng Wang their differences in the drawing form,content and characteristics.Second,documenting and interpreting of select works of Shimeng Wang.The selected six cases provided in chronological order will be analyzed in their profile,plan configuration,structure design and shape considerations.Thirdly,it discusses the traditional architecturedesign method of Shimeng Wang in two aspect.One,the design process will output some crucial drawings including plans,Shui-gua,Dong-lu,and Gao-chi,also some assistant drawings including Pai-lou and architecture form etc.The other,Jie-lu play an important part in controlling the scale of architecture and esthete,discuss the Jie-lu experience and aesthetic of building components of Shimeng Wang.The Northern China has gone quite far in the documentary and research of imperial style,meanwhile the folk related research is still lacking.The documenting and interpreting,by the author,of the Xi-di sect drawings will contribute greatly to the repair of traditional buildings and structures and further understanding of the design intent.Also the database establishes base on the research will make up for the absence of contemporary folk carpenters’ drawings nowadays.
