Power transmission lines are an essential power sector component, and their secure and consistent operation adds to the economic steadiness and growth directly.Due to irregular and inaccurate maintenance inspection in power line corridors, power corridors may be affected by encroaching vegetation causing accidents and hence power interruptions. As such, performing circular inspection of power transmission lines corridors is of unlimited significance to effectively give surety for their secure and stable functionality.Due to economic developments, vast networks of power corridors are requisite, which has increasingly brought prodigious challenges to manual inspection methods.Li DAR demonstrated to be a dominant tool in overthrowing challenges to enable more efficient inspection.Although the primary task for circular inspection is detection of power transmission lines, there is difficulty to directly detect them from the huge data as the Airborne LiDAR directly captures the 3D measurement of power installations and all neighborhood objects. The work of this study desires to construct an automatic workflow for detection of power transmission lines aided by LiDAR data. The proposed workflow resides three components: the first is to perform preprocessing to the complex background and interference minimizing impacts.Secondly object points are filtered with the morphological progressive filter. Then the object point cloud is projected to 2D image which is binarised and morphology based on the Hough transform algorithm is engaged in detection of the power transmission lines.Canny operator is used to detect edges in the binarised transmission lines image. Moreover, the study exploits 2D image-based processing technology to detect the power transmission lines, whereby the geometric properties of objects are considered for selecting the power transmission line structures.Lastly,a comparison of the detection result and run time of the two methods is made and consequently future directions are deliberated.
