The ubiquitous availability of smartphones as well as great desire for healthy and efficient life lead increasing researches based on smartphone platform and even the emergence of relevant innovative products.Thereforce,an optical fiber spectrometer based on smartphone is proposed. The spectrometer uses thin-core fiber(TCF)as the incident optical fiber and achieves a wavelength resolution up to 0.5nm in the visible range.By utilizing 3D printing technology, all optical components of the spectrometer are packaged in a shell(60mm*42mm*17mm),which enables the advantages of compact, convenient, flexible and low cost. Then, theory of thin-core fiber multimode inteferometer(TCFMI)is introduced and the sensing principle of temperature, pressure and refractive index is analyzed.Work of simulation is done to optimize its transmission spectrum for the visible light band.Furthermore,a sensitivity enhanced TCFMI is fabricated exprimently with the help of real-time spectrum monitoring and etching setup. The TCFMI works as a visible light sensor is tested by smartphone spectrometer and commercial spectrometer respectively.Expriment result shows a high sensitivity at a refractive index higher than 1.4.Measurement results of two spectrometers have a high consistency, indicating the feasibility of the refractive index sensor based on smart phones. Finally,we integrate TCFMI into a microfluidic chip, which can be further extended to applications such as biological and chemical sensing.
