Global climate change resulted in the decrease of sea ice both in coverage and thickness at arctic zone which raised the possibilities of arctic-oriented navigation and resource exploration,and make it one of the international concerns.Polar ship,as an important carrier,is now playing an indispensable role in aspect of resources exploration,opening of route and scientific investigation.The factor of polar environment,in particular the sea ice,brought a great impact on polar ship's structure.Based on plastic strength analysis theory,in this paper the theoretical and numerical simulation methods are employed to investigate the strength of bow and side structure of polar ship.Firstly using LS-DYNA software calculated the ice load applied on target vessel for cases of ice-bow and ice-side interaction.Secondly,by simplifying side and bow structure to plate-attached beam and rectangular panel as typical models,the ultimate strength principle is proposed to calculate the plastic ultimate bearing capacity for above simplified models.The proposed method is verified by comparing the results with those of numerical simulation.Finally,utilizing nonlinear finite element method calculated the structure's plastic ultimate bearing capacity of target vessel,analyzed structure strength.
