The Guan Yu Temple located at the start of the middle tourist line of Mount Tai is an excellent historical building in Shandong province and was listed as a national key protection unit in 2006.This paper obtained the measurement data of the whole building space through field surveying and mapping and then established a spatial model. On the basis of field investigation and interpretation of the existing inscriptions in the courtyard, the record about the rebuild and repair of Guan Yu Temple is arranged and the historical evolution of its architectural layout is deduced.Detailed expatiation is launched from three aspects of the architectural complex, architectural elements and other environmental elements including plants, stone and water, paved ground. In the chapter of the architectural complex,it discusses the traditional spatial consciousness "harmony between heaven and man" reflected in the relationship between Guan Yu Temple's architectural complex and the its surrounding environment;analyzes the isomorphism of Guan Yu Temple's layout in contrast to the royal temple in Beijing;illustrates Guan Yu Temple's two spatial sequences axis and the spatial feeling in marching. The architectural space of temple is divided into three categories of courtyard space, transition space and interior space on the basis of spatial closure mode. The spatial organization model of mountain building is summed up as “channel + concave space + concave steps + I-shape platform + convex steps + temple courtyard”.In the chapter of the architectural elements,it lists the general situation of existing buildings in Guan Yu Temple;indicates the historical inevitability of the combination of the gate and pavilion;points out the traditional etiquette system embodied in the layout of the main hall and the secondary hall;summarizes the late Qing Dynasty's stylized characteristics reflected in the temple's decorative art such as the roof, the doors and windows, the color painting, the plaques and couplets. At last,it introduces the practices and characteristics of screen wall, stone lions, steps and railings. In the chapter of other environmental factors, the present distribution of plants in the temple is illustrated;the traditional meaning embodied in the plant and its effect on the formation of the space atmosphere are discussed;the important value of ancient tree is pointed out;the scenery features of a stone named "Root of Cloud" and a waterscape named "Lesser Ying Zhou" are described. At last, the pavement of Guan Yu Temple is counted and the paving patterns were listed according to the materials. In the chapter of protection, the value of Guan Yu Temple is appraised and some concrete suggestions for the protection of the Guan Yu Temple are put forward. In the chapter of renewal,it analyzes the current situation and existing problems of its utilization;points out the necessity of Guan Yu Temple's renewal. At last,on the basis of strict protection,in order to make full use of the Guan Yu Temple, the concept of "micro-renewal" and some concrete renewal suggestions are put forward.
