Traditional extensive field management resulted in low water use efficiency, precision agriculture would be one of the best selections to improve production and water use efficiency.Study on spatial variability of potato tuber yield and quality and its possible association with soil properties have important theoretical and practical significance for applying precision agriculture. The study was carried out at potato farm located in the southeast of Maowusu Desert in Yulin city of Shaanxi province. The study covers an area of 38.7ha, uses sprinkler irrigation. Potato yield, quality, and some soil properties were measured from 2015 to 2016, and their spatial variability were analyzed using classical statistics and geostatistical methods with related software(ARCGIS 10.3and SPSS 22.0). The main results are as follows:(1) The spatial structure of soil texture, bulk density and electrical conductivity were found to be similar between two yeais, and structure variation explained about most of total variation. The spatial structure of soil water content was found to be similar at different time.(2) The spatial structure of potato tuber yield and quality was found to be similar between two yeais. Yield and quality were significantly correlated with soil properties.(3) Different methods to delineate irrigation management subareas are advanced in the paper for more rational design of precision irrigation scheme. The study area is divided into management subareas based on the spatial distribution of soil moisture, sand content, bulk density, conductivity and crop yield and quality. The statistics analysis and single factor variance analysis indicate all methods are rational. Growers can choose different classification methods according to their needs.
