Moso bamboos(Phyllostachys edulis) are important forestry plants in southern China, and they play a positive role in maintaining ecological balance. The Broad-Leaved Forest in Upper Slope and Bamboo Plantation in Lower Slope(BUBL) has become a common forestry management strategy in southern China. It is a compound ecosystem, which means on the top of the mountain, there is the broad-leaved forest and the rest parts of the mountain are moso bamboos. Soil moisture is one of the most important component of the surface water resources, which links soil, plants, atmosphere. There is a close relationship between soil moisture and the plant growth. Moso bamboos need plenty of soil moisture in the moso bamboo shoots stage and the height growth stage. The research of the soil moisture in the moso bamboo forest, has important significance in artificial management of moso bamboo forest. In this research, we chosen three sampling mountains of the BUBL as the research objects in Yanling County, Hunan Province. Type?: pure moso bamboo forest; type?: on the top of the sampling mountain has the proportion of 10% broadleaved forest; type?: on the top of the sampling mountain has the proportion of 25% broad-leaved forest. We take a study on productivity of moso bamboo and the character of soil moisture from these three kinds of sampling mountains. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) The productivity of moso bamboo, type?, type?are higher than type?. The DBH distribution of moso bamboo showed: type?>type?>type?. All these sampling mountains have some kinds of variability. Then we used Kruskal-Wallis rank test on it, the results showed that the type of the sampling mountain, slope position, elevation, all these factors have a significantly different effect on the DBH of moso bamboo.(2) The assessment of water conservation capacity of three sampling mountains, the results showed that the water conservation function of the water source are Grade One, and size of the water storage capacity showed: type?>type?>type?. It indicated that the existence of the upper broad-leaved forest is benefit to enhance the capacity of water storage. The increase in the area of the upper broad-leaved forest will help to further enhance the capacity of soil water storage.(3) There is a time distribution of differences of soil moisture. During the study period, the soil moisture is generally through the process of “rising?falling?rising?falling”. Combined with the dynamic change of soil moisture in different mountains, according to the time course, it can be divided into accumulation period, stable period, consumption period and recovery period.(4) The total analysis of soil moisture of three sampling mountains, the water content is in turn: type?>type?>type?. The results indicated that the existence of broad-leaved forest can store more water. The study on soil moisture distribution in different slope position of the sampling mountains. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the soil moisture between each slope position. The soil water content of the same slope was significantly different between the sampling mountains.(5) The soil moisture distribution showed that there was some regularity in different depth of soil. There was a significant difference in soil moisture between the same slope position and different soil depth. In comparison with the same slope position, there was significant difference in soil moisture between the same slope position and same soil depth.(6) The correlation of linear regression analysis on soil moisture and the DBH of moso bamboo, showed that there was a significant correlation between soil moisture and the DBH of moso bamboo.(7) The upper broad-leaved forest can store more water. When the top of the mountain exist the proportion of 25% broad-leaved forest, the soil moisture supply capacity was the best.In summary, under the BUBL management pattern, the broad-leaved forest in the upper slope are significantly improved on soil water conservation ability. It also can influence the moso bamboo effective productivity and has important significance on the sustainable management of moso bamboo forest.
