It is well noted that light and nutrient have both important effects on plant growth.Taking Machilus pauhoi from different provenances as studying objects, shade treatments and N addition experiments were conducted.Functional traits such as growth, morphological and physiological traits were compared to analyze systematically the response and adaptive mechanism of light treatments and nitrogen addition on the growth and leaf traits of Machilus pauhoi from different provenances.Main results were as follows:(1)Except for YX and CL provenances, shade treatments and N addition have significant effects on the other provenances.Except that YX and CL provenances were insensitive to shade treatments and N addition, the relative growth rates under the treatments of shade and N addition from the other provenances were higher than those of full light and no N addition.(2)Leaf Chlorophyll contents could be significantly raised under shade and N addition treatments.Shade treatments had significant effects on the whole experiment period, but N addition treatments had only effects on the initial experiment period.Among the same provenance, leaf Chlorophyll contents under the treatments of shade and N addition were higher than those of full light and no N addition.(3)Shade treatments had significant effects on leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf water contents of Machilus pauhoi from different provenances. However,N addition treatments had significant effects only on leaf traits in July of individual provenance.Considering different treatments of the same provenance, the values of leaf traits under shade treatments were higher than those under full light treatments.(4)Full light treatments had significant effects on stress-tolerance indexes such as Malondialdehyde,Soluble Sugar Contents and Calcium contents.Meanwhile,N addition treatments had significant effects on stress-tolerance indexes from SC and JO provenances. The values under full light treatments were higher than those under shade treatments.Under full light conditions,Calcium contents from JD provenances were highest, while Peroxidase and Soluble Sugar Contents from JO provenances were highest. However, under N addition treatments,stress-tolerance indexes from SC provenances were higher than those from the other provenances, showing great advantages.
