ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of SanZiPaiTanTang combined with ambroxol in the treatment of asthma airway mucus hypersecretion in rats, and to explore its effect whether is superior to the separate traditional Chinese medicine or western medicine.MethodsForty rats were randomly divided into five groups:normal group, asthma group, SanZiPaiTanTang group, ambroxol group, The combinational group (SanZiPaiTanTang combined with ambroxol group), with 8 rats in each group. The model of asthma rats were reproduced by OVA. All the rats were morphologically scored in the 42th day and 56th day; Airway inflammation was measured by HE staining; MUC5AC levels were examined by immunohistochemistry; The IL-13 content of blood were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EILSA);Goblet cell were detected by PAS staining.ResultsThe morphological score and airway inflammation in all drug treated groups were less than those in asthma group; The MUC5AC levels of asthma group were higher than that of normal group (0.530+0.035 vs 0.132 ± 0.020, P<0.05). The combinational group (0.254 ± 0.029), Chinese medicine group (0.359 ± 0.025), and western medicine group (0.386 ± 0.030) were lower than the asthma group(P<0.05), and the difference between combinational group and Chinese medicine group or Western medicine group was statistically significant (P<0.05); Compared with asthma group, the IL-13 content of the combinational group, Chinese medicine group and Western medicine group were marked decreased (42.41 ± 3.15,46.31 ± 3.07,43.05+2.70 vs 51.65 ± 4.07, P<0.05), and the combinational group was significantly different from Chinese medicine group (P<0.05), but had no significant difference with the western medicine group; The goblet cell hyperplasia area of the three drug treated groups were lower than the asthma group (41.21 ± 2.88,48.10 ± 3.44, 51.06 ± 3.51 vs 63.25 ± 5.02, P<0.05), and the difference between combinational group and Chinese medicine group or Western medicine group was statistically significant (P<0.05);ConclusionsSanZiPaiTanTang combined with ambroxol can suppress the excessive secretion of airway mucus in asthma rats probably by reducing the expression of IL-13 and goblet cells, and its efficacy is better than chinese medicine or western medicine.
