Finite element analysis can conduct stress and strain analysis for objects in complex shapes and the mechanical property testing is comprehensive and objective. The finite element analysis applied in the lumbar spine is a research hotspot.Lumbar degeneration is usually caused by a variety of cumulative damage to the components of spinal motion segments. The finite element model can simulate the complex organization and loading system, simulate the spinal motion segments to conduct a stress and strain analysis in detail under a complex cyclic loading, can accurately simulate the complex geometry model of the lumbar vertebra, and help us understand the relationship between biomechanical properties and the degeneration of lumbar intervertebral disc. The article reviewed the finite element development, spine finite element concepts, and principles and modeling methods, the application of the finite element model in lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration and lumbar disc herniation surgery, and evaluated the development direction of the application of the finite element model.
