In recent years, the surgical treatment mode is comprehensive, mainly giving priority to with surgery. but as the growth of the age, the organ compensatory function is declining, and the elderly more with a variety of chronic diseases, disease itself and the surgical trauma, postoperative complications and mortality rate increased obviously. These complications will not only affect postoperative recovery, aggravate the illness, and even lead to death. Therefore, evaluating surgical risk objectively and effectively and then taking corresponding measures have very important guiding significance to improve prognosis, reduce the postoperative complications and mortality. POSSUM and improved scoring system is widely applied in the surgical field. They use patients,preoperative physical score and degree of surgical trauma to predict postoperative mortality and complications and evaluate surgical risk. In this paper, we reviewed the formation, development and application of POSSUM and improved scoring system in the surgical field.
