To investigate the safety and long-term efficacy of Wingspan stent for the treatment of severe atherosclerotic stenosis of the middle cerebral artery.Between September 2012 and November 2014,278 continuous cases of clinical symptoms within 90 days with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis?70% of middle cerebral artery were enrolled into this study from our stroke database and followed up until the end of June 2015.The endpoint events were any stroke or death within 30 days after stenting and ipsilateral ischemic stroke afterward.Among the 278 enrolled patients,277 patients(99.6%)underwent stent successfully. The mean rate of stenosis decreased from 82.5±7.9% to 9.0±3.2% following treatment.Within 30 days after stenting,12 patients(4.3%)developed endpoint events, including 8 cases(2.9%)of hemorrhagic stroke and 4 cases(1.4%)of ischemic stroke,2 cases are perioperative death.During 8-33 months of follow-up,19 patients developed endpoint events. The 1-and 2-year endpoint event rates were 5.8%(95% CI,5.0%-15.7%)and 7.2%(95%CI,4.3%-10.1%),respectively.From the research we can conclude that the treatment of severe symptomatic atherosclerotic stenosis of middle cerebral artery using Wingspan stent was safe and effective, and the long-term stroke recurrence rate after stenting was low.
