Purpose MicroRNAs play an important role in non-small lung carcinoma(NSCLC),however, the correlation between miR-4739 and NSCLC is unknown. We investigated miR-4739 expression in NSCLC,and analyzed its relationship with clinicopathological features and prognosis. Methods Samples included tumor and matched normal lung parenchyma tissues from 190 NSCLC patients and 17 embryonic lung tissues. The expression of miR-4739 was examined by real-time PCR;and that of p53,EGFR,K-ras and Ki-67 were detected by immunohistochemistry.Furthermore, the relationship between miR-4739 expression and the clinicopathological features of 190 cases was analyzed.Overall survival(OS)was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method.Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazard model. Results MiR-4739 expression was significantly downregulated in NSCLC and embryonic lung tissue compared to normal lung tissue, and its expression was notably low in nuclear cell proliferation antigen Ki-67-positive NSCLC cases. In addition,miR-4739 was preferentially decreased in subgroups of patients with positive mediastinal lymph nodes, with poor differentiation or with stage Ⅲ and IV tumors.Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that the survival of patients with low miR-4739 expression was obviously worse than those with high expression. Moreover, multivariate analysis showed that low miR-4739 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor survival. Conclusion MiR-4739 was downregulated in NSCLC tissues and embryonic lung tissues. Its expression was associated with tumor cell growth and proliferation, poor clinical features and unsatisfactory survival.Collectively, all results suggested that miR-4739 may serve as a potential biomarker for NSCLC tumorigenesis and prognosis in the future.
