Background and Objective: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the novel locking plate and reconstructive plate using in acetabular fractures. Methods: Between June 2009 to July 2014, patients with acetabular fractures were included in this study. We grouped the patients into two groups based on the fixation plate:the reconstructive plate group (RPG) and novel locking plate group (NLPG), Patients’data like demographics, mechanism of trauma, associated injuries, Letournel classification, surgery approach, time from injury to surgery, duration of the surgical procedure, time from operation to discharge, the blood loss and drainage flow were evaluated. The quality of reduction and radiological grading were assessed according to the criteria developed by Matta. The clinical assessment was based on Harris hip function scores. Results: We totally collected 127 patients who met the inclusion criteria with acetabular fractures. The RPG consisted of 85 patients treated with reconstructive plate. The NLPG consisted of 42 patients treated with novel locking plate. The parameters like duration of surgical procedure, blood loss, and drainage flow after 3 days of operation, NLPG is better than RPG significantly. Postoperative Harris hip function score: 88.07 ± 6.4 points for the NLPG, 85.07 ± 8.4 points for the RPG (P = 0.032). Postoperative Matta score: 2.1± 1.5 mm for the NLPG, 2.4 ± 1.6 mm for the RPG (P = 0.014). The incidence of postoperative complications was 19.0% in the NLPG, 23.5% in the RPG. There was significant difference between the two groups (x2 = 44.51, p <0.0001). Postoperative hip function Harris score, postoperative Matta score, postoperative complications of the NLPG is better than the RPG, this is statistically significant. Conclusion: The novel locking plate may be a better choice for the treatment of acetabular fractures than reconstructive fractures in Chinese.
