Objective: To study the relationship between serum bone morphogenetic protein(BMP-9)concentration and hypertension(EH)and Insulin Resistance.Method: A total of 132 participants diagnosed with primary hypertension and 93 normal subjects as control were enrolled in the cross-sectional study from 2014 to 2016.Blood pressure,waist circumference and hip circumference,Body Mass Index were measured.Blood samples were taken for measurement of biochemical indicators,such as fasting blood-glucose(FBG),postprandial blood sugar(PBG),blood lipids,fasting insulin(Fins)and BMP-9.SPSS19.0 was used for data Processing and Analysis.Result: Circulating BMP-9 levels are non-normally distributed in the two groups,Circulating BMP-9 levels were lower in patients with EH than in controls [46.19(31.85-67.79)vs.77.21(39.33-189.15),P<0.01] and correlated negatively with blood pressure and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)(P <0.01 or P <0.05).HOMA-IR was higher in the hypertensive patients then controls [5.04(4.16-6.83),2.45(1.50-3.60),P<0.01].Decreasing levels of BMP-9 were independently and significantly associated with EH.In a multiple linear regression analysis,only systolic blood pressure(SBP)and free fatty acid(FFA)were independently associated with circulating BMP-9 levels,the multiple regression equation was: YBMP-9a = 1.593-0.004 XSBP + 0.203XFFA(P<0.01,R2=0.123).In addition,increasing levels of BMP-9 showed a significant linear trend and were independently associated with EH,when concentrations were analyzed both by a Row mean scores test and a Cochran-Armitage trend test.In addition,the best cutoff value for circulating BMP-9 levels for predicting EH was 110.10ng/L(sensitivity95.5%,specificity47.3%,AUC0.692).Conclusion: Decreased BMP-9 levels are associated with increased blood pressure in hypertension.BMP-9 is an independent predictor for hypertension,and may influence blood pressure by protecting endothelial function,angiogenesis,and decreasing insulin resistance.
