Objective Today, the clinical treatment of stage ? breast cancer is still based on systemic chemotherapy, while for surgical treatment,it remains controversial. Therefore,we aim to further explore the impact of surgery on survival for patients with stage ? breast cancer, using the Surveillance,Epidemiology, and End Results(SEER)database. Methods We selected 2,304 patients diagnosed with stage ? breast cancer from 2010 and 2011 in the SEER database, which were divided into the surgery and non-surgery groups. We assessed the curve of breast cancer-specific survival(BCSS)and overall survival(OS)between the two groups by Kaplan–Meier plots and the hazard ratios(HR)for each variable was calculated by the Cox proportional hazard regression models. In addition,we performed stratification analysis with breast subtype and tumor size to reveal the effects of these variables on surgery. Results The median survival time was 29 and 23 months for surgery group and non-surgery group,respectively.Kaplan-Meier curves showed that surgery group favored a better survival than non-surgery group. The HRs of surgical group were 0.491 in BCSS and 0.486 in OS(P<0.001).Further,stratifying according to breast subtype and tumor size,it was observed that patients with surgery still have lower values of HR than non-surgery patients. This indicates that the factor of surgery is still a protective factor even after stratification analysis. Conclusion: Surgical treatment appears to be associated with improved survival for patients with stage ? breast cancer, independent of breast subtype and tumor size and surgery is an independent prognostic factor.
