Matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9)which belonged to the gelatinases of the matrix metalloproteinases large family,also known as gelatinase-B,had the role of degradating and remodeling of extracellular matrix.ECM was an important part of the heart and played a role in supporting and fixing the heart.Under normal circumstances,the ECM was relatively stable.As cardiovascular disease occurred,the changes in the expression of MMP-9 made the regulation of ECM abnormal.The synthesis and degradation of ECM was out of balance,resulting in the change in the proportion of ECM components.The normal functions of ECM such as supporting and transmitting information were affected,so that the heart showed pathological morphology and produced a variety of complications.In the heart,the degradation of the ECM had an important effect on cardiac remodeling.Mainly in the following areas:the cell and heart lost the support and fix,myocardial cells extended,heart cavity was outstretched,heart function was obstacle.In the atrium mainly in the following aspects:the atrial wall became thinning,the atrial diameter enlarged,normal atrial cell components decreased,atrial emerged extensive interstitial fibrosis,and ultimately the occurrence and development of atrial remodeling was promoted and maintained.Atrial enlargement and atrial interstitial fibrosis were the main manifestations of atrial structural remodeling.It could be seen that MMP-9 played an important role in atrial remodeling.1 MMP-9 not only participated in normal physiological processes such as angiogenesis,wound healing,regeneration,embryo development,et al,but also had an important impact on the atrial structural remodeling in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease(such as atrial fibrillation,heart failure,mitral valve disease,myocardial infarction,etc.)2 Inhibiting the expression of MMP-9 could inhibittid atrial remodeling,it was an important direction for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
