Objectives:To explore infants and young children's anemia status in interventional county and controlled county before and after the nutrition intervention and assess effect of the YingYangBao(YYB)program on improving their anemia status. At the same time,to analyze problems existing in the assessment, providing basis for developing and implementing of the YYB program.Method:According to monitoring and assessment program for child nutrition improvement projects in poor areas.two counties were selected and one was as interventional county(Xianfeng county),then the other controlled county(Jianshi county).Complementary food supplement(YYB)and related health education were given to infants and young children among 6-23 months in Xianfeng county from June,2013 to one year later and Jianshi county was as blank control.Infants and young children among 6-23 months in Xianfeng county should take one packet of YYB every day.Data of infants and young children and their caregivers' basic characteristics, feeding situation and awareness of anemia related nutritional knowledge of the caregivers before the nutrition intervention and consumption of the YYB was collected.Anthropometrics and hemoglobin were measured in the field before and after the nutrition intervention.SPSS 20.0 software was used to analyze the data, including descriptive statistical analysis,single-factor analysis and factor analysis.Results:1.After one year of nutritional intervention, the prevalence rate of anemia among infants and young children aged 6-23 months in Xianfeng county decreased from 37.7%to 29.7%(P=0.001),and the decline rate was 21.2%.As a controlled county, the prevalence rate of anemia in Jianshi county was 39.7%in 2014,which was declined 3.7%,and the decline rate was 8.5%(P>0.05).After the intervention, the prevalence rate of anemia of girls in Xianfeng county decreased from 37.1%to 27.4%(P<0.05),declined 9.7%,and the decline rate was 26.1%.But the decrease in boys in Xianfeng county was not significant, also the same in Jianshi county in both boys and girls(P>0.05).As for month age, only 6-11 months infants in Xianfeng county had a decrease in prevalence rate of anemia and the decline rate was 23.0%(P<0.05),the rest of children in Xianfeng county and all children in different month age in Jianshi county didn't have a significant decrease in prevalence rate of anemia(P>0.05).2.44.6%of Infants and young children in intervention county keep taking YYB every day and 26.9%of them rarely or never take it.51.0%take YYB according to quantity every time and 23.0%occasionally or never take it according to quantity.Seven children(1.1%)never get YYB.3.Baseline status between interventional county and controlled county wasn't the same.In the baseline survey, family income was higher in Jianshi county and caregivers'knowledge about anemia was higher, too.Caregivers of infants and young children and their height and weight, also the prevalence of anemia was different between two counties in the baseline survey(P<0.05).As we can see.Infants and young children were not the same person before and after the nutrition intervention in two counties, and characteristic of the children was different, too. All the above difference may decrease the comparability in effect assessment.Conclusion:1.In general, effect of the YYB on improving the children's anemia status was obvious.2.Compliance of YYB in infants and young children should improve.3.Monitoring and evaluation in the practical work may have some bias on the effect assessment.
