An Analysis Of Subtitle Translation Of Chinese Movies From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

As the researches of translation of film subtitles,the researches of western countries are carried out in a widespread and in-depth level while our country lags behind without forming the systematic theories.The researches of subtitle translation mainly focus on the impacts of space and time limitation,the strategies of subtitle translation,the supervision of the translation quality as well as the standardization of subtitles.The majority of the subjects are the Chinese-English translation of subtitles of Chinese films or the English-Chinese translation of English movies,with few searches on other foreign languages besides English.On basis of the "purpose","coherence" and "fidelity" rules of Skopos Theory,this essay is intended to discuss the appropriacy of the use of literal,liberal and reduced translation strategies by studying the Japanese-translated subtitles of several selected Chinese movies.Through the analysis of multiple translation cases,it is found that the most prone to error by using literal translation strategy is mistranslation or translation error of vocabulary.It violates the principle of "faithful",also violates the highest principle-"purpose".It is shown that "faithful" is the most basic principle of three principles.Subtitle translation by using liberal translation strategy often has a good message of the source text and intention when it is in conformity with the principles of "purpose" and"coherence".However,the cases in violation of "faithful" have missing translation and mistranslation from the perspective of text comparison,even if the expression effect of subtitle is not affected the audience's understanding of a coherent story.Strictly speaking,it is not a successful translation case.As to translation by using reduced strategy,it can generally deliver complete message of the source text and intention.However,the translation which absorbs in "purpose" and violates "faithful" miss some important cultural information because of omission and simple translation.It would lead to Japanese audience could not have well psychological and emotional experience of the characters.In conclusion,the ultimate principle is "purpose" and the basic principle is"faithful" while translator translating Japanese subtitles of Chinese movies.On the basis of "faithful",translator should also follow the "coherence" principle.Therefore,the information and intentions of original film subtitles could be conveyed accurately and fully.
