The Influence Of Four Words Idioms Of Different Segmentation Methods On Chinese Text Reading: Evidence From Eye Movements

Information processing theory of reading model hold that reading is a process that from the words of the identification of a bottom-up build meaning in discourse understanding,word recognition is a vital part of the reading.In Chinese reading another meaning of the word recognition is word segmentation.Improper segmentation way will directly affect the identification of semantic and discourse understanding.In this study we use the slash to mark word segmentation,experimental material are four words idioms.Using eye tracking technology records college students' eye movement when they reading Chinese declarative with different ways of segmentation and familiarity quadword idiom.The experimental subjects in design for two factors,23 college students were recuited as subjects.Independent variables for the idioms of three different segmentation methods(Error segmentation,Correct segmentation,no segmentation)and the familiarity of target idioms(High familiarity,Low familiarity).Experimental material are Chinese declarative with different familiarity quadword idiom.(1)The analysis results showed as a whole,Average Fixation Pupil Size,Total Time in Zone,Total Fixation Count,Total Saccadic Count,Average Saccadic Amplitude,from the above eye movement indicators have significant differences in idioms of familiarity.The sentences with error segmentation idiom have longer fixation time,more fixation counts and saccadic counts,shorter saccadic amplitude.(2)partial analysis showed that readers process the low familiarity idioms more difficult.For the first fixation duration there were no differences in two independent variables,but had significant differences in fixation time and the second fixation duration.So the familiarity and the different methods of segmentation did not obstruct the early stages of a word recognition,the main role in lexical processing of late stage.(3)Error segmentation method was different from Two other segmentation methods on the high familiarity idioms level mainly,had no effect on low familiarity idiom.There was no difference between Correct segmentation method and no segmentation method.Correct segmentation method did not affect the reading process.
