A Project Report On E-C Translation Of Cultural Comment Column In New Yorker

News comments,technically a combination of current events and ideas,focus on the depth of thought and have distinguishable language style.Traditional ideological interpretation of some high-profile or highly-agreed cultural events was too narrow to cover the news taking place in today's world,where the increasing cultural exchange gradually bridges the gap between China and western countries.The columns in the New Yorker have provided good examples on cultural comments with the probe into events and dissemination of strong humanistic care.Here chosen are some hot topics that arouse strong social resonance,such as the tertiary education,ice bucket challenge and the ban of Big Bang Theory.By translating the cultural comments,this report aims at investigating the similar humanistic spirit embodied in different cultures.Differences between Chinese and English languages,as well as the cross-cultural factors are the main obstacles to deal with in the process of translation.Furthermore,the literary language style and the narrative logic behind each comment add more difficulty to the translation assignment.To ensure that the translated version is acceptable to the Chinese readers,this paper adopts the translation strategies at lexical,syntactic and textual level under the guidance of communicative translation theory,such as the employment of four-character structure,part of speech conversion,amplification and omission,reconstruction of word order as well as notes of cultural factors.By proposing some concrete approaches and general rules in translating cultural comments,this report intends to provide some references for other news translators.
