Following Scar Literature and Root-Searching Literature, the Avant-Garde novels had once dominated the Chinese history of literature in the mid-to-late 1980 s,during which period Ge Fei received the critics’ attention to his efforts of distinct form exploration and idyllic wording of scholarliness. Marked by the publication of Peach Blossom Beauty in the new century, the researchers tend to divide the literary creation of Ge Fei into two different stages as there is an increasingly noticeable transfer from the Avant-Garde narration to the classic. This thesis studies the works of Ge Fei as an integrated and steady whole.Using the spirit of fear revealed by the narration in all his novels as a entry point, the auther analyze the text representation and the spiritual inspiration of fear as well as the significance of criticism of fear-writing. Based on the analysis of the significance of criticism of fear-writing, the Paper identifies Ge Fei’s strong sense of attention to reflect the world of reality and his efforts of rethinking Chinese contemporary reality, which has been overweighed by the critics’ excessive emphasis on the modern form exploration in his early works– with a sober mind and elegant writing style, Ge Fei expresses his intention to the reflection of modernity.
