Processing Information In Diagnostic Component For Categorizing Body Emotion:Behavioral And FMRI Evidence

Human perceive the outside world through information of input stimulus.That is not except for emotional information.What are used to distinguish between certain types of information is called diagnostic information.And for the visual processing of emotional information is the research about diagnostic component.The study before mainly focused on the diagnostic component of the face expression and its cognitive processing mechanism.Such as mouth of the pleasant,nose of the disgust,and the mouth of fear facial expression.They are the diagnostic components used in distinguishing among expressions.Processing the diagnostic parts will elicit similar brain emotional activity with the corresponding complete face.For example,fear triggers activity in the amygdala for both of them.On this basis,we made this study on several basic body expressions of anger,fear,happy,sad,and neutral to reveal the diagnostic component for categorizing and brain mapping during processing.In the first study,bubble paradigm was applied in obtaining the diagnostic emotional information for categorization.Participants were asked to categorize incomplete body-activity stimuli as one of the five specific types of emotions.Overlay and division were used to estimate average weights of all the conditions.After repeated-measure ANOVAs,the results found that 1.The diagnostic component of anger is the limb part of whole body;2.Fear is head and limb part body;3.Happy is upper limb;4.Sadness is the head;5.Neutral one is upper limbs.This study provides evidence of which body parts should be the diagnostic parts for the subsequent study which mainly focuses on identifying the relationship between diagnostic parts and whole body.The second study contains two event-related f MRI experiments.What differs the two experiments is their emotional types.Employing same measure to generate stimulus: Original body emotion images in first study were divided into four groups which are only the head,only the upper body,only the lower limbs body,and whole body.Participants were also required to decide the emotional type of these body parts and the whole body.Imaging results of brain activity educed by the emotional body parts were collected during the process ofidentification task.The results found that 1.behavior accuracy results are consistent with experiment 1 and to get the diagnostic parts in identifying the body emotions,except for fear which contains only upper limb;2.The imaging results show that the diagnostic part and the whole body has a broad,consistent patterns of activated brain areas: 3.diagnostic parts and whole body in each emotion conditions activated: extra-striatum and fusiform body area(FBA)for anger;amygdala and insula for fear;the superior temporal sulcus for happy and sadness;4.All kinds of emotions elicited activations in pre-central gyrus and supplemental motor area to some extent.Research indicated that: 1.There really exists key parts of body emotion processing;2.diagnostic parts showed main characteristic of certain type of emotional activity.3.Processing diagnostic parts in human brain will also elicit the similar activity to the whole body for categorizing certain type of emotion.
