Listening comprehension, an indispensable ability in English study, is a positive process to differentiate, screen, combine, memory, interpret, store and predict the acoustic signals. As a complex psychological process, listening plays a key role in the verbal communication. For listeners, listening comprehension is definitely not only limited to the understanding of words or sentences, but also involves communicators' intentions as well as context in communications. Cognitive context, taken as the result of psychological construct, is suitable for interpreting listening comprehension process of human beings.Based on the basic explication of cognitive context in relevance theory and Professor Xiong Xueliang's manipulation mechanism of cognitive context, this thesis deepens down the research of English listening comprehension to the knowledge script,psychological schema and scio-psychological representation level. Guided by the relevance principle, the involvement and influence of cognitive context in the interpretation of English listening comprehension is described and analyzed. In addition,some implications for domestic English listening teaching are also given in this thesis. It is earnestly hoped that these implications can assist students in improving listening efficiency and providing inspirations to English listening teaching to a certain extent.
