| Jack Kerouac’s On the Road is recognized as the representative work of beat literature. And it has experienced a progress from criticism to acceptance in the literature field of America and China. This thesis attempts to study on the image of On the Road in China from the perspective of imagology. Based on the social, historical and cultural context, the thesis analyzes the different translations at different periods.The thesis selects the four translations from Shi Rong and Wen Huiru, Tao Yueqing and He Xiaoli, Wen Chuan and Wang Yongnian for the purpose of a comparative study. After analyzing the situation of different periods and translations, it can be found that the recreation of image by the translator is influenced by national ideology, translators’ translating activity and reader’s factor of the target language. In the 1960 s, national ideology dominants and manipulates the whole translation. As a political purpose, the translation of On the Road is to shape the decadent and corrupting image of the American imperialism countries, so as to demonstrate the superiority of socialism. With the development of era, the translator’s subject identity is recognized. In the translating process, translators control the translating behavior through their initiative to gain their desired effects. To a large extent, that a translation can exist for a long time depends on reader’s acceptance.Based on analyzing, it can be seen that the novel has already been changing in nature from a decadent novel to a guide of soul travel, from an object of political study for a small number of people to a fashion trend pursued by the common people in China.Especially in the modern society, the increasing pressure of social life forces persons to seek for ways to release their obsessions from the inside. The emergence of On the Road exactly conforms to their soul needs, so its spiritual traveling of being on the road has relatively easily deepened into hearts of Chinese people. |
