This thesis aims to discuss how to enhance TL style-oriented readability in popular science translation in the light of translational norms theory through the English-Chinese translation of excerpts from the popular science book Periodic Tales. The thesis conducts a comprehensive analysis of TL style-oriented readability and sets it as the central guideline for a set of translational norms (initial norms, preliminary norms, and operational norms) in the said translation with a view to exploring the whole process in which the translator selects the source text, sets translation strategies, methods and techniques, and renders the source text specifically. The practice-based research has led the Author to find that it is by no means an easy job at all to achieve "TL style-oriented readability" in PS translation. Firstly, the translator has to take into full consideration various linguistic and cultural factors in and outside the ST in the pre-translation stage for choosing a TL style-oriented ST. Secondly, prior to translation, it is necessary to establish the TL style-oriented translation strategy and adaptation/domestication as a main method. Thirdly, to ensure the readability of PS translation or attract TL readers with the PS style, several translation techniques such as annotation, transliteration, four-character phrase employment, proverb use, shift of perspective, and restructuring should mainly be applied in specific rendering. In addition, the thesis carries out a comparative case study with commentary on stylistically readable translations. The research findings provide some enlightening ideas concerning PS translation.
