| A newsletter is a type of news report.A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication that is generally about one main topic,which can attracts its subscribers.Newsletters are usually published by clubs,churches,societies,associations,and businesses,especially companies to provide information of interest to members,customers,or employees.A newsletter has a relatively stable structure.The present study focuses on structural analysis of newsletters.A new theoretical structure—comprehensive generic structural potential(CGSP)has been constructed based on the theory of Generic Structural Potential(GSP)and move structure.The present study aims at regularities of comprehensive generic structure potential of English and Chinese newsletters.The analysis of the present study applies two basic theories——Hasan' s theory of Generic Structural Potential and Swales' theory of move structure.Based on these two theories,a new analytical structure has been constructed.That is the comprehensive generic structure.This paper is based on a small data corpus of 36 newsletters.Half of them are from CNN,and half of them are from People's Daily.Combing the quantitative and qualitative method,the present study contrasts English and Chinese newsletters in order to explore three research questions:(1)What are the similarities and differences between English and Chinese newsletters' contextual configuration,obligatory elements,optional elements,and move structure?(2)Based on the GSP analysis and move structure of both,what are the similarities and differences between their comprehensive generic structural potential(CGSP)?(3)What are the reasons for these differences of the CGSP in English and Chinese newsletters?This paper has come to the following conclusions:(1)Concerning tenor and mode,both English and Chinese newsletters are nearly the same.Concerning field,all the 36 newsletters are different,because fields of newsletters depend on the issues presented in the newsletters.The field of each newsletter can be judged from the title.(2)Concerning elements,there are 10 basic elements of English newsletters and 8 of Chinese newsletters.There are five obligatory elements and five optional elements in English newsletters.And in Chinese newsletter,there are 5 obligatory elements and 3 optional elements.Chinese newsletters don't contain obligatory elements “Interview of authorities”,and optional elements “specific facts related to theme”.(3)Concerning move structures,English and Chinese newsletters both have three moves——lead,body and conclusion.Elements of English newsletters in lead part are more than those of Chinese newsletters.Elements of English newsletters in body part are nearly the same as those of Chinese newsletters,but the sequences of those elements are different.And elements of English newsletters in conclusion parts are nearly the same as those of Chinese newsletters.(4)Concerning CGSP of both English and Chinese newsletters,move elements in obligatory parts and optional parts have common points in general and differences in details.They have some common elements,while numbers of elements differ from each other.They have different elements in evaluation parts.And the sequences of elements are not the same.(5)The following reasons have been concluded for why these differences exist.The writing habits of English and Chinese newsletters are different;the cultures of English-speaking countries and Chinese differ from each other;the thought patterns of English-speaking countries differ from those of China;the orientations of English and Chinese newsletters are different.This paper is predicted to be divided into six sections.The first section is the introduction part,including research background,research questions and research significance.The second section is literature review,including the definition of some important concepts,and previous studies of GSP abroad and at home.The third section is theoretical framework.The fourth section is the research methodology.The fifth section is the analysis part,and the last section is conclusion.This paper aims to have a further study of GSP on newsletters,to help people get a further understanding on the elements of English and Chinese newsletters,and to have some reflections on the structures of them. |
