Maihime, the first work of Japanese romantic literature, has been writen for more than a hundred years. During these years, because of the special status, academic research about it has never stopped. Compared with the heat of Japanese staudis on it, it's not popular to study either the author Moli Ogai or Maihime itself in China. So up to now, this topic still has a broad research space.Toyotaro, the hero in the novel, is a man who was affected by feudal ideology, got a chance to meet the western liberalism, after that he went through a short time of self-awareness, but these two opposite thought struggled in his mind because of the other feudalism people. After struggling, he chose to give up the new thought and went back to the old ones. Toyotaro's choice destroyed the heroine Alice. As the image of the western individualism, the destroy of Alice means the end of foreign culture, they can not escape the destruction because of the feudal ideology. The meaning of existence of the Mother, as same as Aizawa, reflected from the side that the rooted feudal ideology deep in the hearts was the poison of humanity, people were living a life like mechanized but they didn't realize and even to prevent others from the germination of the thought of progress. As we can see, the feudal ideology, which was embodied in them, was deeply rooted.During the research, this thesis will focus on the following aspects.First of all, this thesis will not confine to the criticism of the hero's character defect and his blind love which has been studied by the academic world. In this thesis we will reveal the tragic color given on the hero through the analysis of different images of roles, and will criticize the feudal ideology about its suppress to the new things and the destruction of human nature. Otherwise, the analysis of character are based on the prototype of the characters, to explore the cruel nature of the feudal society from the contrast between the real world and the literary works,Secondly, this thesis will combine the action of the characters with the national policy system under the specific historical period, find out why the hero's heart changed, trying to analysis the inevitability of the tragedy of love from two angles of subjective and objective.Thirdly, this thesis used Toyotaro the hero as an example, to explore the inner contradictions of the bourgeois intellectuals in the early period of Meiji period, and then to reflect on the restriction to the social development and personal life of the Japanese learning the western culture under the new system.
