This dissertation is a study on the teaching of English pronunciation in British schools.It aims at finding out the teaching patterns of pronunciation in British schools through investigating the specific approaches teachers in the UK adopt in teaching their students English phonetics.Pronunciation teaching of English has been facing the status of being neglected at present in our country.Teachers in our country tend to focus more on the basic elements like vocabulary and grammar.Not enough attention is paid to pronunciation,while pronunciation of English remains to be a vital part in learning the English language and communicating with people.Apart from this,the pronunciation teaching of English in our country needs improvement to make it more efficient.Such being the case,it seems necessary to have a glimpse of the practice of pronunciation teaching in an environment where English serves as people's native language.Therefore,this study is intended to build a bridge between teachers in China and teachers in the UK.Through the study,the teaching patterns of teachers in the UK are revealed,which enables Chinese teachers to draw insights from them.This dissertation is based on primary research in the UK.Questionnaires and an interview were conducted in the UK to find out the approaches British teachers adopt in their teaching patterns.The collected data was analysed by a mixed approach of both quantitative and qualitative methods.Through the analysis of the data,the three hypotheses set for the study were tested to be true.English pronunciation serves as a highly appreciated part in the teaching of English in the UK.Teachers in the UK have different teaching patterns which can be of benefits to teachers in our country.The teaching patterns can be applied to Chinese teaching of English.Minor alterations can be made to the patterns subject to necessity when they are applied in our country.
