Analysis On The Classification And Pragmatic Functions Of English Learners' Interpreting Filler-type Markers Under Levelt's Discourse Model

Chinese and overseas scholars have done a great many meaningful exploratory researches on discourse markers,while studies on filler-type markers are,so far,few.However,filler-type markers are one classification of discourse makers which are much easier ignored by English learners.In this paper,the author will do a sampling study based on the interpretation corpus(PACCEL-S)created by Wen Qiufang et al.(2008).The corpus building project collects linguistic data from Interpretation Test for English Majors-Band 8.A certain amount of teachers and students from nearly 20 universities in our country took part in the process of building the corpus,which consists of many database constructing work including providing linguistic data,transliterating,character logging and the like.As the corpus as the research object will offer a new angle of studying filler-type markers.The research questions the author is trying to solve in this thesis are as following:1.How to classify the interpreters' filler-type markers?2.How to explain the reason of filler-type markers' phenomenon under the framework of levelt's discourse model?3.What are the pragmatic functions of filler-type markers during the process of interpreting?The method the author adopt is corpus-based approach.The author randomly selects 10 Level 1 records from 2013 to 2017 as the study object and the author takes computer aided second language research tool:ParaConc to statistic and analyze data.The author finds the phenomenon of filler-type marker can be roughly classified into 4 types and the author lists the statistical results with elaborate description in the tables.The discourse model put forward by Levelt divide discourse generation into three phrases and a system:conceptualization,formulation,articulation and self-monitoring.The author concludes the causes of filler-type word phenomenon based on Levelt's discourse model:speakers attend to what they are saying and how they say it.They can monitor almost any aspect of their speech,ranging from content to syntax to the choice of words to properties of phonological form and articulation.But they do not continuously attend to all these things simultaneously.Attention is on the one hand selective,and on the other hand fluctuating.Which aspects of speech are attended to is highly dependent on the context and on the task.In general case,speakers are inclined to attend to certain lapses of the tongue or places that are not fluent,and then self-monitor system will makes speakers generate some filler-type markers unconsciously or for pragmatic functioning.The author elaborates the pragmatic functions of filler-type markers at the third part of the reach findings.They are respectively pragmatically mitigating,information revising and supplementing,slacking time and relieving nervousness.The research findings can be a reference for interpreting teaching.From the statistical data we can deduce that since current interpretation textbooks are written in literary,standard and rigid language,students are lack of the original language input and there is little chance for them to have the exposure to the original language environment.It inevitably results in a phenomenon which is not optimistic:Chinese students get used to using Sinicized filler-type markers such as "en","em","and"...in normal conditions.Interpreting teachers should intensify students' cognition and proper usage of filler-type markers;in the meanwhile,they should attach importance to the influence and negative transfer of mother tongue on second language warning their students against using Chinese filler-type words during the process of interpreting.It is expected that the research will be beneficial to interpreting teaching.
