“Four monks in the Early Qing Dynasty” have taken an important position in the long painting history of China,among the “Four monks”,Jian Jiang has the similar age as Kun Can,they were in the society which always had change of dynasties and lived under foreign rule,cracks happened because of decisions,change would in turn lead to an unimpeded state,they are well known in the painting world for their unique art of painting.Based on the case studies on Jian Jiang and Kun Can,and each dynasty produced clusters of celebrities,this paper will do comparative study on the painting style of Jian Jiang and Kun Can.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter analyzes Jian Jiang and Kun Can's development direction in their life paths,thought transition and the reason why they had the key to painting art in the identical historical background.The second part discusses how their landscape painting style to be formed from the perspective on traditional(learn person)?luck(learn thing)?personality(learn heart)and compares it,then it comes up with the conclusion: although they choose different teachers facing of the tradition,they both adhered to the attitude of succession about “imitating the ancients not sticking to”;Faced with fortune,both of them were inspired by the nature of art,especially Huangshan had a profound impact on their painting styles,they pursued “successful learners defer to heart not principles” creative attitude and ideas on body and spirit,they observed its shape and expressed its features,they did not get interested in drawing form and color of nature;Faced with their own temperaments,their unique characters because of bit by bit in the life,thus created a particular aesthetic ideas,Jian Jiang's painting style is quiet and deep as he is a calm and rational person while Kun Can's style is sophisticated and vigorous due to his irritable personality.Both art work is a mirror,it is kind of express of “true self”.The third chapter compares Jian Jiang and Kun Can's painting landscape style characteristics from ink?composition?painting throughout aesthetic.Different contrast between them could better highlight each distinct drawing style feature,Jian Jiang's vigorous concise ink language could be compared to “the sound of fine porcelain”,while Kun Can's generous deep drawing could liken to “the voice of crude pottery”.“Common resides among the personality”,loyal to heart and nature can be obtained from comparison,the two drawing similarity is no mannerism,this exists in any commonality among painting,it has important guiding significance for us.In terms of composition,the painting modality of Jian Jiang seems like a whole,actually it is various,the composition of Kun Can's painting looks like bold and generous,but in fact everything in his drawing is in the rule.As a enlightenment on our composition,rigorous does not mean monotonous screen,abundant does not mean clutter screen;In the expression of picturesque scene,Jian Jiang creates eternal resting landscape,mountains and rocks are upright?rivers are calm,the deep and silence scene makes people feel chilly.Kun Can builds vibrant and ethereal feeling,the peaceful and comfortable life in his painting gets people yearn for.After comparison,it is outstanding that Jian Jiang looks forward to the place outside the world which could transcend the constrains of time,while the seclusion of woodman and fish man?the flying and singing of ape and crane in the paradise are Kun Can's pursuit,but such inconsistent two worlds are expressions of themselves,these are also result of nature and comprehensive culture.The forth chapter studies the status of Jian Jiang and Kun Can in the painting world during late Ming and early Qing Dynasties and the effect on future generations,and teases out Jian Jiang as the leader of “Xin An Painting”,also points out the reason why Kun Can has a high position in art circle in early Qing Dynasty but the impact of him is limited to the later generations.In conclusion,it is more clearly shows the features of art style of Jian Jiang and Kun Can by comparing method from life experiences?minds?personality?succession and other aspects,it may enable us to better understand their paintings,thus prompting us to explore and admire their artistic achievement;The common between their differences could be regard as universal of art creation,it has realistic directive meaning and enlightens us to be good at touching with the traditional vein,it also could help us staring at beginning line and create landscape painting which belongs our era.
