Thomas Mann is the the famous German novelist in the early twentieth century and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.He has written a lot of works involving a lot of themes and types,he was known as the most talented German writer at that time.Death is often the subject of Thomas Mann’s novels.In his novels,there are many descriptions of death,which also show the hero’s thinking,desire,facing and surpassing of death.The theme is very obvious in his early works of "Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family","Death in Venice" and "The Magic Mountain".Thomas Mann is constantly writing down his thinking of death and exploring the mysteries of the death philosophy in his works.There are three main sections in this article.The first chapter describes that Thomas Buddenbrooks in "Buddenbrooks",Aschenbach in "Death in Venice" and Hans Castorp in "The Magic Mountain" are aware of death and begin to think about life and death because of changing of living conditions.The second chapter describes that the three heroes desire for death in order to escape from the pain of life.Thomas Mann is deeply influenced by the philosophy of Schopenhauer’s pessimism and he thinks that death is painful relief.In the third chapter,the three heroes realize the true meaning of life and death and can face death.The three chapters are in accordance with the heroes’ thinking,desire,facing and surpassing of death.Modern people are addicted to material life and often forget that death is the inevitable outcome of human life.Death is an important meaning of life,and therefore escape from death is also escape from life.A healthy awareness of death will help us better understand the true meaning of life and the value of life.Thomas Mann does not write tragedy for tragedy’s sake but makes people better recognize themselves by revealing the tragedy and face death bravely and live better after thinking of death.
