With the rapid development of science and technology, computers become very popular in our daily life. More and more people begin to rely on the network as a medium for communication. Meanwhile, accompanied by the new model of computer mediated communication(hereinafter referred to as CMC), a new language variation-Netspeak arises at the historic moment. As a new branch of linguistics,it not only meets the need of the CMC(computer mediated communication), but also attracts much attention of many experts and scholars. In the global information age, computer-mediated communication(CMC), as the mainstream of social intercourse, has attracted attention of all circles of society and provided a new field for linguistic research. Some linguists even predict that “Internet Linguistics, a new branch of linguistics, is coming into being”. UP to now, some empirical studies of CMC have been done from the perspective of various features of linguistic forms, however, as for the pragmatic research of CMC, it was seldom referred. Thus, there is a pressing need for descriptive and empirical research from the angle of pragmatics of CMC, so as to promote the satisfactory communication on the Internet. In this thesis, several well-liked chat rooms have been used by the author to collect many language samples. In order to analyze adaptation degree of pragmatic theories in Netspeak and guarantee data fidelity and adequate, all the samples are copies of the original conversation. Therefore, it maybe includes spelling or grammar errors that take place within the chat rooms. Generally, after entering a chat room, the author just remained silent and read the conversations and then picked up appropriate conversations. This paper starts the research from the Internet and Netspeak, and provides a brief history of the Internet, states the definitions of the Internet, Netspeak and chat room respectively. And it continues to introduce the Netspeak from the causes for the development of Netspeak, including cultural factors, social backgrounds, technological foundations and psychological factors. Then, by discussing these causes, this thesis offers a general view of Netspeak's features. In the new context of the Internet, this kind of language variety possesses its uniqueness which is different from that of face-to-face communication. Next, considering different communication aims, people have to conform to some communication principles, such as Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle. They are regarded as the general guidelines to successful human communication. These maxims are common in communication in every language community. The thesis is oriented to complete the analysis of text-based CMC on the basis of those two communicative principles of language. So it puts up the following questions:1. How do participants deviate maxims of CP and PP in online chatroom conversations?2. If Internet users fail to fulfill the maxims of CP and PP in Netspeak conversation, what are reasons?3. Is there any new strategies to compensate them to ensure successful communication? what are they? From the analysis, the author finds that Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle are still work in online chat room. However, it is true that deviations of maxim of CP and PP exit in chat room conversations at the same time. Some maxims of them are easily violated to some degree for some reasons, such as spoof, trolling, lurking, complain and so on. What is more, both in daily conversation and Internet conversation, deviation of CP and PP has already become inevitable and universal in some degree. Moreover, in order to make communication successful, internet users have been used to a series of approaches of interlocutions which broke original pragmatic principles. In order to keep peace with the development and necessity of Internet communication, it gives rise to create more and more practical and adaptable pragmatic strategies in the new communication context, such as(a) economy strategy.(b) multi-topic strategy.(c) recreation strategy.(d) tolerance strategy. To sum up, pragmatic strategies are limitless,as for Internet communication, the study of pragmatic strategies will attract more and more people's attention. The author hopes this thesis can serve as reference for further study of Netspeak and help people have a better understanding of CMC. Besides, the study will inspire more researchers' interests in this field so that CMC can be promoted and meet the requirements of the rapid development of the Internet communication.
