The Study Of Spatial Form In William Faulkner’s Novels

Time and space are the two basic elements of the organization about novel narrative form.But, for a long time,people are used to rely on timeliness factor instead of spatial factor to create characters and organize the narrative.Therefore, traditional novels often present a linear structure form.After entering the modern,the writers change the traditional structure of the form in a large extent under the banner of innovation, they are increasingly using spatial factors to organize narrative,thus the novel text has taken on a spatial structure form which is different from the traditional linear structure form in some ways.Of course,this “space” is not the physical space environment which people live in,but a variety of similar narrative synchronic collocation states or similar narrative loop combination states in the novels.Its most obvious feature is the destruction of the linear narrative sequence.William Faulkner is a model of the modernist writers,his novel narrative form also shows a distinct spatial characteristics.In a nutshell,spatial form in Faulkner’s novels mainly includes several kinds of basic types,for example, “orange disc type”,“doll type”, “collage type” and so on.So, what approaches did Faulkner use to build spatial form?What artistic functions does the spatial form have that different from traditional novel form?The thesis’ basic view is: main construction approaches which used by Faulkner to build the spatial form are flexible narrative perspective、repeat technique and montage technique;the main artistic functions in his spatial form are the expressive force of text and the alienation effect.The main body of the thesis consists of three chapters:the first chapter is mainly to analyze and describe the spatial form types in Faulkner’s novels,it is the answer to the question of “what”;the second chapter is mainly to invest and study the means of spatial form in Faulkner’s novels,it is the answer to the question of “why”;the third chapter is mainly to differentiate and analyze the artistic functions of spatial form in Faulkner’s novels,it is the answer to the question of “how”.
