Selected works of Mao Tse-tung(hereinafter referred to as Selected Works) fully embodies Mao Tse-tung Thought that not only pushes Chinese social history progress and democratic revolutionary success, but also has great implications for democracy and liberation of the third world countries through the translation of Selected Works. The English translations of Selected Works is no doubt one of massive translation activities in Chinese translation history. It gets organized many eminent translators and scholars both at home and abroad. During the Seventh National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in 1945, Mao Tse-tung talked about the importance of theoretical works translation in the conference. He even said that there is no translation, and there is no Chinese Communist Party because we Chinese people would never know what Marxism is without translation. However, translation is not conducted in a vacuum, it is the product of the society and the culture. Andre Lefevere(2004, preface) states that all rewritings, whatever their intention, reflect a certain ideology and a poetics and as such manipulate literature to function in a given society in a given way. Poetics is a historical variable as it is not absolute. The current dominant poetics differs from the poetics dominant at the inception of the system in a literary system. Different poetics dominant at different stages in the evolution of a literary system will judge both writings and rewritings in different and irreconcilable ways, all based on good faith and the conviction that each is the representative of the only truth. Therefore, the English translations of Selected Works are absolute manipulated by the current dominant poetics and translators' personal poetics when they are translated. The thesis, based on the poetics of Lefevere's manipulation theory, attempts to analyze the manipulation of English translations of Selected Works during translating. It can be divided into six part. The first part will introduce research background, research significance, research methodology and originality of the thesis. The second part gives a brief introduction to research status of Selected Works and poetics manipulation in the domestics and overseas. The third chapter is a theoretical framework. Three factors of Lefevere's manipulation theory including poetics, patronage and ideology are mentioned in this chapter. The fourth part consists of three aspects to analyze the poetics manipulation in the English translation of Selected Works. The purposes of translating are consolidating socialist ideological development, strengthening Mao Tse-tung's authority and influence, and promoting China's international status. Translation purposes will decide translators to choose which kind of translation strategy. Once the poetics is codified, it will entail the canonization of the output of certain writers whose social status and great influences on the society and whose work is regarded as conforming most closely to the codified poetics. Therefore, the canonization of Mao Tse-tung is conducive to the canonization of Selected Works, and the canonization will affect translators and scholars how to choose the theme and translation strategy. Then an introduction to the dominant poetics and translators' political attainment are discussed to clarify the poetics manipulation in the process of translating Selected Works while translators' personal poetics is about to be argued due to vivid characteristics of translation of Selected Works. The fifth part mainly discusses translation strategy manipulated by the poetics. The translation strategy of faithfulness is always throughout the whole English translation. It will analyze faithfulness in vocabulary, logical relations and translating style. The last part is a conclusion. The English translations manipulated by both the current dominant poetics and translators' personal poetics can better propagate Mao Tse-tung Thought and Chinese characteristic culture to the overseas.
