| Literature is an important part of a national culture. It directly embodies the history and culture of the nation, and reflects a nation’s common psychology and ways of thinking. Understanding a nation’s common psychological and thinking mode will help to promote cultural exchanges with the nation, hence boosting friendly exchanges with the nation in many other aspects. Both Chinese and Vietnamese cultures have a very long history. During the long period of their individual development, there have been many crosses between them, and they have been influencing each other to some extent. Xiang Linsao, the main character in one of Lu Xun’s story Zhufu, and chi Dau, the main character in one of Wu Bisu’s story Lights Out, were living in different ages. The former was in 20s and the latter in 30s last century, but both were in the same social historical stage, known as the eastern feudal system is about to collapse. In the turbulent and changeable society, through their works, both writers were inclined to reflect the sufferings of the people at the social bottom and reveal the ugliness of the society. Both Zhufu and Lights Out were such stories. Either of them, however, was based on its own social background. There were, therefore, many similar and different elements in both stories, which makes the comparison and contrast of the two stories possible and meaningful. The similarities and differences and their causes were studied in the way of comparison and analysis. Firstly, the stories of both writers have many in common such as in image connotation and artistic expression: they both focused on workmen at the bottom of the underlying social workers, especially the tragic fates of the rural working women. In artistic expression, they both used realism creation technique to depict the main typical character. However, they chose different writing materials and using different expressing ways because of their different writing purposes and slightly different motivation. |
