In early modern England,not every girl would marry and have children when they were in marriageable age.Hard economic condition leaded to the shortage of women's dowry,the discrepancy of different religions belief,the limit on the poor from church,inequality of male and female population,and single men's celibacy thought,a variety of factors influenced each other,resulting in the emergence of a large number of single women.The single state made them the heterogeneous of the world,and were detested and despised by the society.Defenders of patriarchal society tried to take various measures to expostulate and redempte,trying to make them return to the traditional social orbit..Facing to the discrimination and prejudice from society,Single women were not passive acceptance.They had recognized to improve their value through struggling for economic independence,and being learned.Some single women could not bear the abuse from celibacy.They were eagering to get married.Some of them dissatisfied with the limitations of marriage,valuing freedom and comfort of being single.They angrily choosed celibacy.Single women had recognized their own interests,trying to take measures to help themselves in a helpless situation.No matter what the final result,it is an important attempt in adversity for them,indicating the progress of their marriage concept and independent consciousness.They grow up step by step with adversity,providing for a bedding for women against male dominance in the future and fighting for women's rights movement that strive for women interests.
