The Paralanguage Study Of TV Talk Show Host

Language is human's most important communicative tool, but it is not the only one. Paralanguage is of great significance in terms of the transmission of information and the expression of emotion, it is also another important tool for assisting language in communication. However, Paralanguage has been long ignored by linguistics circle and the study on it is not as deep as other linguistics areas, nor guided by systematic linguistics theory. What's more, the study on the role that Paralanguage plays in cohesion and coherence in spoken discourse is lacking in in-depth and systematic analysis.This paper consists of six parts:The first part:the previous researches were reviewed. This part mainly introduces the previous studies on paralanguage and television interview program. It comprehensively straightened out the domestic and foreign language scholars'research achievement about the concept, classification, function and application of paralanguage, as well as the related research status of TV talk shows nowadays. And it briefly introduced the related theories of discourse analysis method, which demonstrates the theoretical basis of this article.The second part:the analysis of application of host's paralanguage in the TV talk show. This part mainly analyzes the concrete application of Yang LAN's paralanguage in "Yang LAN interview" from the sound and silent aspects. Which Include voice difference operator, voice modification, voice interval and alternative, expressions, gestures and body posture.The third part:the cohesion and coherence in spoken discourse in terms of the TV talk show host's paralanguage. This part applies the method of discourse analysis to discuss the specific performance and the function of Yang LAN's paralanguage in "Yang Lan interview" from the perspective of cohesion and coherence, and imply paralanguage's effect on promoting the initiation, maintenance and termination of conversations and the realization of cohesion and coherence in interview.The fourth part:the semantic expression and comprehension in spoken discourse in terms of the TV talk show host's paralanguage. This part studies the effect on Yang LAN's paralanguage in strengthening, increasing and replacing the semantic expression in "Yang LAN interview" in order to dig up the subtle meaning of her paralanguage in a particular context.The fifth part:factors that influence host's application of paralanguage in Talk Show. This part further analyzes the characteristics of Yang LAN's paralanguage and its subtle situational context and social cultural context based on the discourse context theory, which concluded that it is the synthetic effects of situation, individuals, shows and society that form a host's unique paralanguage art.The sixth part:conclusion. Firstly, this part made a brief review and summary on the above main content. Secondly, it explained that the application of paralanguage had certain generality and particularity by analyzing the host's paralanguage characteristics in "A date with Lu Yu" and "Listen to Ke Fan". Thus, it indicated that the research of paralanguage application had a certain theoretical and practical guiding significance. Finally, it pointed out that this article needs to be improved due to the subjective and objective factors.
