A Practice Report On The Translation Of The Round House

American-Indian literature mainly takes Indian life, culture, spirit and religious beliefs as the theme, with the aim of calling for equality, friendliness and peace between man and man, and man and nature. Louise Erdrich is one of the most important representatives of American-Indian literature, who enjoys a great status in American literature, and whose works are full of strong cultural ambience. For example, The Round House, one of her novels, contains a rich Indian culture by blending tribal history and legends of Chippewa——a tribe of Indian——passed on by word of mouth. The translator intends to translate the book The Round House, which might help Chinese readers have a deep understanding of American-Indian literature, to promote the exchange between Indian culture and Chinese culture.The report analyses difficulties and problems in the translation of the novel, and discusses about what kinds of translation strategies and methods should be adopted to solve them on the basis of eco-translatology. With translation adaptive theory as the fundamental, eco-translatology holds that translators are the centrality of translation process. They should abide by the multi-dimensional translation principle of "selective adaptation and adaptive selection" and the translation methods of "three-dimensional conversion", that is, language-dimensional, cultural-dimensional and interactive-dimensional adaptive selection conversion method, to make the target text represent the ecological structure of the source text. In the translation practice report, the translator, under the guide of the three-dimensional principle of eco-translatology, focuses on the following three aspects:the linguistic transformation that complies with the methods of analogy, addition, conversion and sentence reconstruction; the cultural transformation which the strategies of literal translation with annotation and free translation are adopted; and the communicative transformation that the methods of parallelism and commonization are mainly applied. In addition, omission and linearity are comprehensively employed in the translation process.The report shows that in translating the Indian novel, the translator must comprehend accurately the content of the source text, and the culture and history concerned in the source text, and must consider fully how to present the source culture in the target text selectively and adaptively. In addition, on the basis of faithfully delivering the information of the source text, the translator should make sure the translation smooth and fluent in language so as to express properly habits of the source language and the writing style of the source text.
