A Report On Translating The Blind Assassin

The thesis is a case study report of the E-C translation practice. The translator has translated chapter one and chapter two of the Blind Assassin into Chinese under the guidance of functionalist approaches. With comparison between the original text and translation, the thesis is endeavored to do research on the key points and difficulties in E-C translation.The Blind Assassin is one of the masterpiece of Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. The novel has a complex construction and various clues. It tells the life of sisters of Chase family, and shows the reflection on Canadian history, the writer's personal life and female situation. The language of the novel is concise and poetic and it delivers the readers the aesthetic beauty. The translator tries the best to keep the readability of the original text and give the target readers the same enjoyment of beauty. During the translation, the translator found that,it is important to maintain the style of the original text. The two chapters includes other literary genres and the translation should maintain the stylistic features as far as possible. As to the translation strategies, the translator applies the literal translation and free translation. In case study, the translator focuses on the vocabulary and sentence analysis and give the solution to the difficulties,such as annotation, conversing the words into sentences, and so on.The translation report is an preliminary exploration and attempt on literary translation. The translator hopes that it will provide reference for the translators and the readers of the novel.
