A Study Of The Chinese Phrase Of "Very+N" Under Systemic Context View

The Chinese phrase of “?N”(very+N) is the most typical one of the “degree adverb+noun”structure, the “N” stands for the noun. From the syntactic point of view, the structure of “degree adverb + noun” is regarded as a violation of the rules of grammar. However, in fact people understand this structure without lowering comprehension, and it has been accepted by more and more people for its unique meaning function. In recent years, this structure has emerged in increasing numbers in our lives, especially in spoken language and literary works. There are different views about the Chinese phrase of “very+N”, some people think that the noun in the structure has been transformed into adjectives; some people hold that the noun has been used as adjectives temporarily; some people claims that the noun in the structure is multi-category word. People still have different opinions on this question, so further researches are needed.This thesis will analyze the Chinese phrase of “very+N” from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and hold the view that the generative mechanism of the Chinese phrase of “very+N” reflects the basic cognitive rules in humans' cognitive process. A systemic context study on the Chinese phrase of “very+N”is a breakthrough on researches of new language phenomenon of China. Under the systemic context theory of Langacker, the structure of “degree adverb + noun” is no longer a violation of the rules of grammar. Systemic context theory provides a powerful explaination for "very+N" structure, and creates a new situation for dynamic study of Chinese phrase.In addition, the study can enrich grammar theory of China, and it plays a basic role in the study of related applications.This study has collected a large amount of the Chinese phrases of “very+N” in modern time literary work, news media and Internet, introducing the theoretical framework such as category-view, systemic context theory and related theories of Langacker, and analyzing “very+N”structure within the framework of category-view and systemic context theory of Langacker. In the main part of this thesis, firstly, a brief study of the degree adverb in “very+N”structure is presented; then, the systemic-context-analysis of the “very+N”structure is the main concern of this part.Using lots of theory methods such as category-view, systemic context theory and related theories of Langacker to make an explanation for the generalization mechanism of the Chinese phrase of “very+N”.This paper holds the view that the Chinese phrase of “very+N” is not a violation of the rules of grammar, and the systemic context theory of Langacker can explain the generative mechanism of the "very+N" sturcture in a proper way. That is to say, The noun "N" in the Chinese phrase of “very+N” is a complex category, this complex category is described as a schematic network reasonably, and this network is constituted by a set of nodes and a series of arcs. In this schematic network, some nodes are more prominent. When people speak of or mention the structure of "very+N", an important node of the schematic network of “N” is activated in the process of encoding. This activated node is thus sanctioned as a full-schematic example “N'” of the linguistic category “N” through categorization. And these full-schematic examples “N'” combined with "very" together, they become the popular structure we use.
