| As a representative of the manipulative school, André Lefevere is inspired by the systems thinking of polysystem theorists. He conducted research from the cultural perspective and introduced nonliterary elements to translation research, such as patronage, social conditions and economic manipulation. According to Lefebvre, translation cannot be completed in a vacuum, and various problems occurring in the process of translation cannot be completely addressed by linguistics alone. The process of translating is not only influenced by linguistic factors, but also social, cultural and political factors to one degree or another. Essentially, translation is a rewriting of an original by deliberate manipulation and rewriting under the role of mainstream poetics, patronage, ideology and other factors. A considerable number of domestic translation researchers have paid great attention to Lefevere‘s theory of manipulation. In accordance with the manipulation theory, retranslation and mistranslation can be reasonably explained relatively. This explanation can resolve people‘s doubts about being unfaithful to the original in the translation text.While researching the English translation of Wolf Totem, this paper is based on Lefevere‘s theory of manipulation. In 2004, Jiang Rong’s masterwork Wolf Totem was published, which was translated by American Sinologist Howard Goldblatt in 2008. In 2008 the English translation of Wolf Totem was officially published by the British Penguin Publishing Group, which led to a number of prominent media reports at home and abroad. Since its publication, Wolf Totem has been a favorite of readers, and the translation of such a book will largely promote cultural exchange and dissemination. In this paper, the recreation parts in the English translation of Wolf Totem is explored and researched to analyze why it is favored by readers.The conclusion part of the paper summarizes the keynote of the paper, pointing out that the translation version of Wolf Totem by Howard Goldblatt is a process of recreating that is completed under the manipulation of poetics, patronage and ideology. At the same time, the popularity of the English translation of Wolf Totem has set a good example for the effective output of Chinese literature and Chinese culture on a global scale, and also sparked endless speculations. |
