This project report aims at summarizing main difficulties during the translation of this sort of text, and translation methods and achievements under the guidance of relevant theories:before the translation, it is necessary to figure out the type of ST (source text). According to Newmark's text type theory, bidding document is classified into informative text—chiefly releases main issues and demands to the public and draws bidders attention, thus the translation of a bidding document stresses authenticity which can be handled as it is in infomiative text translation. Because of the standard and rigourism of mechanical design criteria, this project report takes the translation of mechanical design criteria in bidding document as the project to be studied. As a result, it is considered to adopt functionalist theory during translation. The purpose of the translation is to help a Chinese company learn better of the mechanical demands of Parabola Copper (Pty) Ltd., enhance its advantages and win the bid.During translation, translation methods like amplification, omission, inversion and separation are used. Amplification and omission are mainly adopted in solving problems appearing on lexical level, while inversion and separation are used in solving difficulties the translator met on syntactic level.
