This translation project report analyzes the subtitle text of a documentary Wild China. Television dramas, films, and documentaries, as carriers of cultural transmission, push the communication among countries. Subtitle translation is of great importance in this condition. Nowadays, Chinese audience watches overseas television dramas and film on the Internet. Most subtitles are unsatisfying and are translated by online subfan groups. In addition, the study on subtitle translation in China is still young. Consequently, subtitle translation is worthy of study. The author chooses the subtitles of Wild China not only for the love for the documentary but also for finding solutions to the difficulties that may be obstacles during the translation process with the help of Functionalist Translation Theory. During the translation process, three main difficulties that obstructed the author are as follows:the translation of culture-loaded words, the translation of profession knowledge, and the translation of long sentences. With the help of the Functionalist Translation Theory, the author finds several solutions to the difficulties on the basis of translating the subtitles of Wild China. For example, the author translates the culture-loaded words through the domesticating translation and free translation. Background information and domesticating translation improve the translation of professional information. The problem of translation of long sentences is solved through splitting-up and inversion.
