In the modern era of information explosion, news has become an indispensable part in national development, social progress and personal life. Because of its own special rules and requirements, the news languages are studied in depth and from different perspectives by an increasing number of experts and scholars. The study of news language is conducted mainly from two aspects: first is the stylistic perspective, which aims to study how to apply the linguistic theory in news writing practice, and how to sum up in practice the language rules in order to improve language proficiency of news. The second is critical linguistic perspective, which deems that none of the news reports can reflect the viewpoints or the interests of all the people, instead it reflects different political interests structure and ideologies. This thesis is a critical analysis of English and American news reports about “Chinese Dream” from America and Britain which are the representatives of western countries. In 2013, Mr. Xi was elected as the new president of China and he put forward “Chinese Dream”, which is nourished by Chinese culture and the thought of the Sinicization of Marxism. “Chinese Dream” adheres to the road of modernization of a Chinese type, which emphasizes peace and development. However, Western news agencies have published a large number of review articles, in which the British and American English news reports are the representatives. For this new big political change, few researches have been done on the relative news reports both at home and abroad. Therefore, this thesis carries on a pragmatic presupposition of those relevant news reports, aiming to excavate the hidden characteristics in news reports and show its functions from the perspective of pragmatic presupposition. This thesis collects 15 English news reports as the research object from several western news media which belong to America and Britain, the typical representatives of western countries. The news reports all connect with Mr. Xi and “Chinese Dream”. By using different linguistic devices, the 15 English news discourses sculpt an authoritarian image of China and implicitly convey the information that “Chinese Dream” is the best description of China's wild ambition and it may be just a political tool of Chinese government to strengthen its power. All these information are connected with the characteristics of pragmatic presupposition. Therefore, by analyzing those selected English news reports, this thesis shows how those western news agencies implicitly express their intentions and motivations in news reports, and hopes that the analysis can help readers get more motivations on news reading, and dialectically understanding western news reports.
