| Since China's reform and opening up, our country's inbound tourism has made enormous achievements, which has become the important way for our country to earn foreign exchange and solve employment problem. English for Tour Guides, as the most important language tool for receiving international tourists, plays a key role in improving the quality of tour guide services.The previous studies on English for Tour Guides are mainly conducted from the perspectives of stylistic characteristics, tour commentary writing, translation and interpreting, teaching, cross-cultural communication, functional linguistics, cognitive linguistics and pragmatics, and yet no one makes a research on the realization means of its illocutionary forces. This thesis attempts to make a qualitative and descriptive study on English for Tour Guides by constructing the corpus from the angle of speech act theory, aims to conclude the linguistic devices of various illocutionary forces through the analysis of different speech acts, and elaborates how these linguistic devices effectively realize tour guides' communicative intentions.According to different realization ways of tour guides' communicative intentions,English for Tour Guides can be classified into direct speech acts and indirect speech acts. In tour guides' direct speech acts, representatives have the richest linguistic forms which directly provide tourists with objective and informative interpretations.The linguistic forms of directives, expressives, commissives and declarations are employed throughout a tour to guarantee efficient and high-quality tour guide services.Indirect speech acts remedy the defect of monologue interpretations of tour guides' direct speech acts and diversify ways of interpretation. Indirect representatives enliven tour atmosphere by interactive linguistic forms and fulfill the illocutionary force of making an indirect introduction to tourist attractions. Considering the matterof politeness, indirect directives make tourists accept tour guides' suggestions and directing pleasantly by particular linguistic forms. Meanwhile, indirect expressives and indirect commissives enrich tour guides' language.The two linguistic devices used in tour guiding, figures of speech and humor, are also indirect speech acts. Rhetorical language adds aesthetics to scenery appreciation,which satisfies tourists' requirement of aesthetic experience. Humorous language brings joy to tourists, and even alleviates the displeasure caused by something undesired. There are some limitations in authenticity and flexibility of tour guide language due to the short of live linguistic data. By broadening the study scope of English for Tour Guides, this thesis provides reference and inspiration for international tourism practitioners, those who intend to be international tour guides and Tourism English teachers to improve tour guides' pragmatic communicative competence. |
