In recent years, with the developm ent of modern educational technology and the reform of foreign language teaching ideas, PPT co urseware characterized by various m odes(including text, im ages, sound, color, m ovement, etc.) can attract learners' attention from multiple channels, and in a certain extent can s trengthen the input of language inform ation, which has become a popular aided way for fore ign language teaching. After a brief review of the studies on PPT courseware in multimodal foreign language teaching at hom e and abroad, a fact is fo und that although there are abunda nt studies in m ultimodal foreign languag e teaching field, few of them analyze the PPT courseware of college English teaching materials from the perspective of multimodal theory systematically.New Horizon College English(NHCE) teaching materials are approved by the Education Ministry of the State Council, aiming for “the revitalization of the action plan for twenty-first Century” and “the project of network course construction in the new century”. According to the actual demand and textbook characteristics, the self-contained complete PPT courseware of NHCE is developed by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, combined with the teaching model, which is “based on the modern information technology, especially network technology”. Based on this, this research adopts Visual Grammar(VG), which is proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen, and Royce' s Intersem iotic Complimentarity Theory, taking Section A of self-contained complete PPT courseware of NHCE(Second Edition) Book 1 to Book 4 as corpus, in order to answer the following three questions:(1) What are the m ultimodal features of NHCE PPT courseware?(2) How can these multimodal features of the NHCE PPT courseware co-construct the whole discours e meaning effectively?(3) What are the implications of NHCE PPT courseware to multim odal PPT design and college English teaching?The results show that:( 1) NHCE PPT courseware mainly uses visual modes and audio modes. A good deal of utilizatio n of the co mbination of i mage and text can transmit knowledge effectively, which can provide a m ultimodal learning atmosphere for the students. The alternate use of dark color and pure color can stress the key and difficult point during teaching. The regular and system atical typography can m ake every section lo gical and structured. The playing of recordings and videos can practice students' listening and speaking.(2) The discourse m eaning of NHCE PPT courseware is realized by co-construction of different modes which can be re flected from three aspects, including the ideational meaning realization of image and text, the interpersonal meaning realization of image and color, and the textual m eaning realization of image and typography. The for m of i mage and text, however, plays a v ital role in the meaning realization of intersemiotic relations.(3) When designing the PPT courseware sim ilar to NHCE, choosing m odes properly to m aximize meaning construction and collocating modes effectively to optimize meaning construction are the vital factors taken in to consideration. Finally, the overt instruction from teachers and the transformed practice for students can be followed to cultivate students' multiliteracies during college English teaching.
