Research Article(RA) is the best presentation of research achievements for scholars. Reporting exists in all the RAs, which refers to the cited content from other sources, and marks with some unique symbols. It is of great importance in that scholars are able to review previous literature and draw forth their distinctive perspectives, as well as communicate with readers.Based on the research of reporting types, grammatical features and rhetorical functions developed by Swales, Petric and other linguists, the thesis is to analyze the reporting distribution and the differences in these aspects between the Corpus of RAs by the Chinese authors and the Corpus of RAs by native English authors in mining engineering journals with SPSS and Ant Conc. Furthermore, the thesis aims to discuss what needs to be strengthened and improved by the Chinese authors and tries to find out the reasons why they cannot use reporting appropriately. The research results indicate that there are significant differences in two Corpora. In comparison with the native English authors, the reporting is underused by the Chinese authors. Their distinctive attitudes have not been expressed towards reporting contents by applying too many neutral reporting verbs. How to appropriately use reporting signals such like reporting verbs, adjectives and adverbs and rhetorical functions such as statement of use, application and evaluation should be further learned from the native English authors. The reasons for the inappropriate use of reporting by the Chinese scholars lie in the cultural difference, underestimating the significance of reporting and the complexity of reporting. The thesis provides reference on how to appropriately apply reporting types, grammatical features and rhetorical functions for the Chinese authors. Therefore, it will be of great importance in the future reporting research and the teaching on the writing of English RAs in mining engineering in China.
