| Lexical bundle,a recurring sequence of three or more words that appears frequently in natural discourse,either in oral or written contexts(Biber,1999),is the frequently occurred structural and functional unit in the natural language.It is argued that lexical bundles play a significant role in fluent speaking and writing.Meanwhile,it is also of great importance for learning English for Specific Purposes.This study was based on Maritime College English Corpus,which is a small-sized self-built corpus.With the assistance of computer software,the analysis of maritime lexical bundles in Maritime College English Corpus was conducted to seek answers to the following research questions:(1)What is the frequency distribution of 3-,4-,5-and 6-word maritime bundles in Maritime College English;(2)What are the structural and functional features of maritime lexical bundles in Maritime College English The results show that in Maritime College English textbooks,there are a large number of frequently occurred maritime lexical bundles and the frequency decreases as the length of the lexical bundle increases.Structurally,maritime lexical bundles cover only nine groups of structural types compared with General English lexical bundles,which are mainly comprised of noun and prepositional phrases.Compared with General English lexical bundles,maritime lexical bundles only denote referential meaning in function and there are no maritime bundles denoting stance or discourse meaning.In order to give further explanation of the function of maritime lexical bundles,there are two new sub-categories added-descriptive bundles and Maritime English referential bundles.The major findings could help the compilation of maritime textbooks and the design of maritime curriculum.They could also provide some new insight for Maritime English teaching and learning. |
