E-C Translation Of Long Sentences In Articles Of Science And Technology

Long sentences are frequently used in English articles of science and technology(EST).EST is featured as informative,concise as well as logical.Combining phrases and clauses,long sentences can meet this requirement.When translating English articles of agricultural science and technology,the author found that nominalized structures,clauses and it-construct are very common in long sentences.These may bring difficulty to the understanding and translation of these articles.To overcome this difficulty and get a correct understanding of the long sentences,translators first analyze the parts of speech of the long sentences,based on grammatical rules,logic and common sense.When it comes to translate,translators shall express meanings in an idiomatic and fluent way.With examples collected from two academic articles published in Nature,which discussed cucumber and apple genomes respectively,this article summarizes four translation methods for long sentence:syntactic linearity,inverted-order translation,division and synthesis.Analysis showed that the rational use of these strategies will help produce accurate rendition.
